Showcase on River Hills ranch home
This gorgeous ranch home is on Honeysuckle Woods in the River Hills community of Lake Wylie. The current home owners purchased the house in foreclosure and endeavored to completely remodel the property when they had trouble finding an existing house to suit their tastes. A months-long process included gutting the house, moving walls, moving stairwells and more.
While contractors were hired for construction the actual design, materials and finishes were all selected by the home owners. This ranch plan with full, finished basement is a wonderful example of an older River Hills 1970s house revitalized and reborn.

Interview with the Owner
How long have you lived here and what first attracted you to the house?
“We have lived here now 2 years. We loved the neighborhood and the location. We were having trouble finding an existing house we liked. We had a really hard time getting over the idea of paying for a house that had someone else’s taste when it wasn’t exactly what we wanted. So we were looking for a project, and the ceilings and the layout of this house were what really sold us.”
Favorite feature of the house and in which room do you spend the most time?
“My kitchen is definitely my favorite part of the house. The overall layout too is a big plus because it has the space we need but it gives us the ability to spend a lot of time together as a family because it’s not compartmentalized. We probably divide our time mostly between the living room and kitchen.”
Have you done any remodeling since you purchased? If so, did you do it yourself or hire an architect, designer or contractor?
“Yes! We completely gutted the house. We hired a contractor but all of the designs we did ourselves.”
What made you want to live in this area of town?
“We already had a child in Crowders Creek Elementary so it was important for us to stay in the same school district. We liked the natural feel and security of River Hills. It just feels a little more community-oriented than a lot of other neighborhoods these days. The amenities are obviously a huge plus but the big thing for us is the natural integrity of the area which sort of bleeds into a natural home environment as well.”
If you could go back and make one change what would it be?
“Oh goodness… let me see… We would probably do things a little differently with the driveway. We love our circular driveway but would have kept it farther away from the house. We also have a side parking area which we didn’t pave along with the driveway. I definitely wish we would have gone ahead and done that. Other than the driveway I wish we had put a window in the master bathroom.”
One feature of the house that guests or visitors may not immediately notice?
“One cool thing we really like about the house is our fireplace. It has a gas starter but it’s a wood burning fireplace. We love wood burning but we have the convenience of a gas starter which is a game changer.”
